On the rare occasion that we stray from the coast and beaches we still try and end up near some water. This trip was no exception. Staying lakeside with some 4WDing, fishing and a good campfire. At a reasonable 2 and half hours hours from Northern Sydney, is where you will find Lake Lyell. Being 20mins away from the main town of Lithgow you rant too far from civilisation. Full disclosure we camped here on the end of the winter season and I was 'fresh' to say the least! Nonetheless, we managed to cramp in a full day of fishing and off-road adventure while we were there. As far as formal camping on the lake goes, you have 2 options:

1. Lake Lyell Recreation Park. This is the main caravan park with facilities

2. The unreserved area on the map marked "where we stayed" with no facilities (free camping).

It isn't clear but as far as I can tell the main park runs this areas as well. They came around each morning collecting fees from each 'site'.

We arrived in the free camping area at around 930pm Friday night after work, set up the tents and settled in at the camp fire for a beer. The next day we starting with trip out to Newnes to inspect the old ruins and establishments. We then pushed back through the Wolgan Valley and to the Lithgow's Lost City 4WD tracks. Topped it all off with an afternoon fishing and nothing caught, which made for some good banter by the camp fire.
